Our DesignersOur Home Accessories posted by Elaine Hovanisian

There is always the question that comes up from my clients when I suggest a large vessel or bowl as an accessory, “I love it, but what should I put in it?” With a big smile I answer with, “This is a great opportunity to be seasonal, bring in a splash of color, or bring in a contrast of material or texture.  It can be fun!” So I took some photos of displays in our showroom at Nantucket Home to give examples.

We just got in these beautiful porcelain white pomegranates, which are displayed in a boat hull-shaped vessel on a bronze stand, on a cement composite table top. I love the balance of materials and shapes. I love the beauty and simplicity of this look.

When a room needs that anchor of art or “splash” of color, I always enjoy hand-blown glass spheres, they brighten any room and put a smile on my face.  Shown here in our big 21” Round Nickel Bowl.

More glass spheres are shown here in a large 24” diameter hammered brass bowl.  Something unexpected to include along with the spheres... starfish!

Including nature in a home always takes my mind to other places, reminding me of past adventures. Here we have a lovely example of contrast; nature inspired textures.  Spindly starfish in a beautiful antique blue and white Cantonese ceramic 15” diameter platter would work in many interior settings.

One of my favorites is a large petrified piece of wood holding white selenite spheres in 5” and 2.5” diameters.

Sometimes a soft neutral palette still works for a seasonal change; new textures, faux furs on poofs, pillows and throws with linen amid this tranquil vignette inspire lounging with family in a warm, comfy home.

With Autumn right around the corner, bring in gourds in all different colors and sizes.  Here they're shown in a large 22” round thick rope basket.  This sort of display helps me savor the simplicities of autumn.  Spending time at home with friends, enjoying warm spiced teas and coffee and seeing this on my coffee table would easily put everyone in good spirits while taking pleasure in the changing colors of nature around us ..I cannot wait!!!

I am very interested in the glass balls you have in this post from Sept 17, 2013. I am looking for about 100-150, depending on size and price to hang in an inpatient unit at Cincinnati Children’s hospital as planets. Could you please give me a call, 513-352-2092 or respond via email. Thank you!
