The 87th Academy Awards are just around the corner and Neil Patrick Harris is hosting (internal screams of excitement!) I've put together a few fun tips and ideas to throw an Oscars party this year from what to serve your guests, how to decorate, and some exciting games to play. Oscar’s night is one of my favorite television events of the year and the best way to enjoy it is with friends and family!

Dress Code:
Totally optional, but totally fun! Ask guests on your invitation to dress up. You can do an old glamorous Hollywood theme or have guests get creative and dress as a character from one of their favorite films. To make it more challenging have everyone dress as a character from one of this year’s Best Picture nominees. You can even make it a competition and give a prize to the winner.

Food:
Don’t worry about spending time on a big lavish dinner for your guests because everyone will be gathering around the television, not seated at a table. Prepare a variety of fun and delicious appetizers for guests to choose from. During the pre-show and red carpet your guests will most likely be socializing, listening to interviews and criticizing the stars outfits so you want everyone to be able to eat and move around. Easy finger foods are perfect for this. Get creative and stick to a movie theater theme! Soft pretzels, sliders, nachos, hot dogs, popcorn etc. will be easy to prepare and guests won’t have to worry about finding a table to eat at. It’s also a fun idea to have popcorn and movie style candy boxes for guests to munch on during the show. You can also have everyone bring some of their favorite appetizers and desserts to get a different selection of goodies to choose from.

Drinks:

Set up an old fashioned bar cart where guests can be their own mixologists! James Bond martinis and celebratory champagne are always a great choice when throwing an Oscars party.

Games:
For some pre-show fun, place bets for best and worst dressed on the red carpet! Have everyone write down their candidates and compare notes. Before the awards show begins have guests fill out cards on which nominees they think will win. Have everyone place a small bet, just a couple dollars or so, and at the end of the night whoever has the most amount of correct picks wins! Also Red Carpet Bingo is also a fun game to play throughout the awards show. My money’s on Jennifer Lawrence falling again, third times a charm!

Décor:
The Oscars are a night of glitz and glamour so your décor should follow suit. I’d suggest picking a color scheme. Red, black and gold are perfect for the night. An easy way to do this is to use red table cloths, gold utensils and black paper plates (no one likes doing dishes after a party). Add stings of gold star garlands or metallic balloons to the walls for a little something extra. Also don’t forget to make seating comfortable! Rearrange your living room so everyone has a clear view of the TV and is relaxed and happy to sit through the whole show. Bring in chairs from another room, put large pillows on the floor also put a hand full of cozy blankets out for guests to use. If you don’t have surround sound, hook up bigger speakers to your TV so everyone in the room can hear the show. It’s also a great idea to dim the lights once the main event gets started in order to create the feeling of being in a movie theater.

Don’t forget the show start Sunday February 22nd at 7pm on ABC!

Happy entertaining and may all your favorite nominees win!
